‘Seldom Seen’ by Megan Rose Neko, reviewed by Trainee Gallery Assistants Simon, Ian, Laura, Steven D, Ben, Benedict & Ryan, with assistance from work experience helper Kiara and staff member Beth.
About the artist:
The artist is a member of staff at Level Best. She is an artist and had a studio at Space Studios Colchester. She is talented at embroidery and painting. She is nice, lovely and helpful. She creates very detailed work and helps make our work look professional at Level Best.
About the exhibition:
The space is colourful. Some of the work is hanging on sticks. Lots of the work is about plants that grow underground and in the water, and the environment. It is about things that don’t always get seen or recognised. Some of the pieces look like the roots of trees. There are dark blues, greens, yellows and black colours. There is lots to see and lots of different textures. There is a touch table which is sensory, which means you can touch it. The exhibition is well put together, and the colours are cool. It all looks amazing!
Simon says, “It makes me happy because it’s Megan’s artwork and she’s friendly and helps me with my knitting. It is nice to have my work up on the walls at the same time. My favourite is the blue painting. Come in and have a look – it’s Megan’s show!’’
Ian says his favourite is the touch table.
Laura says, “It all looks very calming, so calm, I could fall asleep.”Her favourites are the touch table and the embroidered pieces.
Benedict likes the hanging mushrooms, because he likes eating mushrooms – he likes them raw! He would like to see even more colour in the exhibition.
Steven D says, “It makes me smile because it’s Megan’s and she is good. The exhibition reminds me of us at Level Best because we are hidden treasures. I like number six because it looks like a spider web.”
Ben finds the black seaweed embroidery calming because of the amount of detail and the different textures there are to look at. The only way the exhibition would be improved would be if the models in the photographs were more glamorous. He says, “Come and see Megan’s marvellous work”.
