Welcome to our latest art review from this month’s exhibition postpARTum showing at our Colchester art gallery. Reviewed by Trainee Gallery Assistants Ryan B, Marcus and Ben and typed by Will.
Our thoughts on the artists’ work
Marcus: They are all artists and mothers. They have all had different challenges with their creativity after giving birth. This work shows how this has affected their artwork.
Ben A: It is a little bit emotional. They look like nursery colours, and they are all calm colours – awesome!
Ryan B: There are different paint textures and materials, and some are very subtle. It does make me feel calm.
What is the art telling us?
Marcus: Helen’s work has lots of lovely soft pastel colours. There are lots of different textures in each artist’s work. It is quite welcoming and therapeutic. Isabelle Goodman’s colour catcher piece reminds me of the sea. It is sensory to look at and makes me want to try and make one myself.
Ryan B: I think the art is about babies and not feeling alone. I really like the alphabet piece, great use of animals and colour! It makes me feel very nostalgic and reminds me of watching cartoons. The paper weaving work makes great use of old paper – looks good!
Marcus: The work is showing us how/if/when the artists find the time and energy to create. Maybe they do it when their littluns are asleep? It is interesting learning how having children can change people’s art and how they see themselves as artists.
