The Alcove Project – a student art initiative

This event is now in the past. See what is on now via our events page.

Level Best is thrilled to be hosting the winners of the local student driven art initiative that is set to showcase eye-catching artwork on Osborne Street.

The Alcove project, an art initiative, with the aim to decorate and brighten the area at the bottom of Osbourne Street, was originally launched by Colchester Council in 2022.

The Council reached out to the Sixth Form College art department and received responses from talented students all eager to promote creativity in the city.

Numerous students submitted their artworks, resulting in a diverse range of entries, from traditional paintings and drawings to digitally created pieces of art, all of which had a connection to the history of Colchester and the surrounding areas.

The winning pieces of art, chosen by a board of judges will be on display from 1st– 29th Feb at the Level Best Gallery, before the artwork is moved on to the bottom area of Osbourne Street, adjacent to Franklin’s textiles and haberdashery.

Izzy Goodman, Art and Design teacher at the Sixth Form College commented on the project: “Colchester City Council approached the Sixth Form College and asked if our Art department would like to get involved in a community project.”

“We jumped at the idea of creating some local art that would not only brighten up the city but also assist the students with their applications to university by getting involved with a c community project.”

Alison Ling, manager at Level Best Enterprises, commented on the community initiative visiting the Level Best Gallery: “We’re all thrilled to have the winners of the Alcove Project display their work in our gallery. It’s so important for us to celebrate Colchester’s young artists and their creativity.

“For us, as a social enterprise, it’s extremely important for us to continue nurturing old and new community relationships, we can’t wait to see the students works of art on display throughout February. We hope you’ll all come and see the art before it moves onto Osbourne Street.”
