Kinkozan: William De Morgan and Ault introducing Daniel Holt
Reviewed by Trainee Gallery Assistants Adam, Tom C and Naomi, with assistance from staff member Beth.
In our first gallery review session of 2026, we discussed the statement for the exhibition, and that Daniel is interested in antiques, colour, art deco and fashion. We looked at the work on the walls and noticed these themes in the work. Adam pointed out the Tomato soup can and recognised that it is an antique because ‘they look different now’.
Tom C described the room as looking ‘Amazing, it is good. The room is busy, lots of work to look at.’
Naomi said, ‘It makes me happy’ and Adam said, ‘There’s lots of work’.
We chatted about how this exhibition shows lots of different types of work that Daniel has made and they are all quite different.
Our gallery assistants like that there are lots of different colours, but they said the colours are quite dark. Tom C said, ‘I prefer brighter colours’. Adam said, ‘Lots of people, thick, bumpy paint.’
Naomi’s favourite work is the small flower painting, ‘It is pretty,’ she said.
Adam enjoys ‘The colourful man, I like the glasses, I love the colours.’
Tom’s favourite piece is the painting of the Apple logo. He said, ‘It’s like an iPad, it reminds me of relaxing, playing games and watching YouTube’.
Our Gallery Assistants encourage members of the public to come and see this exhibition because ‘It’s different, very unique and lots to see.’ Also, ‘it makes you think’, it is very thought-provoking.
Adam rates this exhibition 11/10
Naomi rates it 2/10
Tom rates it 9/10
The Kinkozan exhibition will be running until the 29 January 2026
