A review written by trainee Gallery Assistant Angus, with assistance from staff member Megan.
Beth studied at university so she has been doing art for a long time. She works with us at Level Best in the art room. In this exhibition, there are 16 paintings – 6 are by Beth and the other 10 are by trainee artists James and Naomi. The room looks arty.
What is important for Beth is DOING the art.
The painting “Who Knew” has lots of green, pink and blue, and a bit of yellow. It’s nice work actually. We’re not sure what it looks like, but whatever it is, it looks good. She did the painting with different sizes of paintbrushes, in oil and acrylic paint. It smells good and it still looks wet. It makes us think about holiday! The blue stripes are like water and the pink could be a path to somewhere.
Angus has seen “Meraki” before at the Patch gallery. “I like that one”, but his favourite in this show is “Make a Wish”. “It makes me think about Water and Wine. I think it took a long time” She probably has to wait for each layer to dry before adding more. We like the bright pink swoosh. “It’s quite happy actually.”
Level Best Art trainees James and Naomi have artworks on the wall in the gallery too. Angus likes both of their styles of work equally. His favourite one of these is “Paint sticks and Popsicles”, but he’s not sure why. “Its got a lot of paint on” We think they are different to Beth’s because they are smaller but they are similar because they use some of the same colours. Also they are just marks rather than a picture of something. The titles of Naomi’s are all personal and unique to her. One of them is “I Like My Bracelets”. This is good because Naomi wears lots of bracelets! James’ artworks have Lady Gaga song titles. He must like those songs.
There are some more trainee artworks in the corridor through to the café.
“I Can Buy Myself Flowers” looks like lots of flowers. “Jellybeans” is made up of lots of dots. Angus isn’t sure what “Rocketman” is meant to be, but that is a song by Elton John. We like that some of the paintings are named after songs.
Angus would describe the exhibition in the following three words:
“Good”, “Colours” & “Big”.
He gives the exhibition 10/10.
“Process” by Beth Holmes with responses from Level Best Art Trainees is showing at the Level Best Art Gallery until December 23rd.
